AMERICAN HISTORY II

American History II students are discussing the issue of US Involvement in Vietnam.  Beginning with the First Vietnam War until the last Americans evacuated in 1975.

EXTRA CREDIT:  From our discussion so far, what would you say was the most important factor in getting the US involved in the fighting in Vietnam?

  2. I think that we didn't want it to turn into another world war so we decided to step in before it got any bigger then it was. I think that this is a good factor because if you put other people in our presidents shoes I think things might of been different.

  3. I would say that the largest or most prevalent factor in getting the US involved with Vietnam was the Red Scare. The United States was going to try to stop the spread of communism in all countries no matter what. When Vietnam's leader Ho Chi Minh (a communist leader and former American ally) was going to have control of North and South Vietnam America panicked. The involvement of the US didn't really stop the spread of Communism to South Vietnam. After we elected a Democratic leader (a bit hypocritical) for South Vietnam, things kind of imploded because at least 70% of Vietnamese wanted Ho Chi Minh to be their leader anyway.

  5. I would say the most important factor of getting the US involved with Vietnam is the red scare. We went to war because we didnt want Ho Chi Minh to have control over both north and south Vietnam. We did not want communism to spread.
