American History I

Students have been discussing what it means to be a radical, conservative, moderate, or a reactionary.  And, they are looking at the main characters in the American Revolution and trying to determine which of these words best describes them.

EXTRA CREDIT: Looking at the movement to support independence, how could the radicals, i.e. patriots, win against the British if they only had support from 1/3 of the colonists?

  1. The patriots had to convince the other 1/3 of the moderates to join their side and fight against the British.

  2. Looking at the movement to support independence, if the Patriots only had 1/3 of the colonists on their side, they would have to have a very good strategy. I think the best strategy would be to let the Red Coats attack them in an area they new very well. Also the patriots had a very strong will to win, that will alone might have been enough for the patriots to win against the red coats even without the numbers they really had.

  3. The 1/3 of the colonists that were radicals would convince the 1/3 of the colonists that were moderate to side with them against the British.

  4. The British did have a lot of advantages over the Colonists but the Colonists won because they had that smart strategy of getting 1/3 of the other colonists to join them and go up against the British. The amount of soldiers had nothing on them!
