American History II students have been discussing the Bill of Rights and the media.
EXTRA CREDIT: Concerning the media, how much do you think mainstream news sources influence our view of issues and how do you think this influence relates to our First Amendment?
The first amendment is freedom of speech, religion, assembly and petition. Therefore mainstream news sources can say anything they want and talk about what ever they see fit as news. This is a huge because news is how the people know whats going on in their world and with some major new corporations using propaganda and being bias it sends out the message that you actually have to listen you need to watch out for these things when you watch the news or here something because ultimately its effecting you.
ReplyDeleteI believe the mainstream news source influences our views a lot more than we actually believe it to. The news anchors subtly change what they say until they are saying something totally different than what they had originally said. They also put more emphasis on things that aren't that big or a deal. They make it out to be breaking news then say that they found the earring or the dog that was lost last week. Also, at the end of most every news report, most of the stations have something referring to how stable they are and how everyone watches that news station when most of the time, they aren't that stable. This relates to the First Amendment because it gives any news station freedom to say their opinions and have all the benefits that they have. But the First Amendment also give the people freedom to hear the truth and not have it distorted like most news channels do.

It changes our opinions on a subject since they have freedom of press they can report the side they want to and with so much twisted to one side we often just are complacent with what they say and form our opinion on what they have shown us not on what we learn on our own.
ReplyDeleteI think mainstream news sources greatly influence our views. When people watch a specific news source, they will learn what that news sources wants them to. For example, if news source A is anti gun, then people who watch news source A will probably be anti gun. If news source B is against gay marriage, then chances are viewers of news source B will agree. Its related to our first amendment rights, because it involves freedom of the press. The press has the right to report whatever they want, be it the truth or not, even if it is influenced by an opinion or agenda.
ReplyDeleteMainstream news sources impact and influence hundreds to even thousands of people each day, and how they view certain issues. The media has a wide range when it comes to influencing people's thoughts, opinions, and general news. Through the First Amendment, these news sources have freedom of the press. This amendment allows them to publish anything they like. Most of the popular news shows such as Fox Television is very bias towards certain subjects. Each person that may be watching that show is greatly influenced by it. Media is widespread and affects people who are on Facebook to people who watch the evening news. People may not even understand just how much it influences them in the long run. If one television show says that abortion is immorally wrong, the viewer will most likely agree with them. If another source says it is the persons own right as a human to decide that, then the viewer might agree. The media is everywhere and it may or may not be true. It is good to be aware of just how much it has an influence in ones day to day life. The First Amendment gives all of the media sources the freedom which in the end can greatly impact and affect anyone who watches, reads, or listens to the source.
ReplyDeleteMainstream news sources greatly influence anyone who watches them. Most people don't watch more than one news source so all the info they have is gained from one news source. People don't question what they hear from a news channel, I mean they can't lie, right? The first amendment states freedom of the press, so if news sources want to lie, they can. It is almost impossible to give the news without throwing your own opinion in at least a little bit, and many people don't realize that. If somebody truly wants to have their own educated opinion, they must do more research on the topic than simply hearing it from one source. Of course, each source could have an entirely different story but hopefully a few will tell the truth, more or less. Overall, most viewers of mainstream news sources just gobble up whatever they hear and hold it as their own view rather than actually forming their own view.
ReplyDeleteI believe that mainstream news can greatly influence the way that issues are viewed by being biased is one way or another and that even though it is wrong for a media source to be extremely biased, it is their first amendment right to say what they want to say. I do think that the law that Canada has that says that news stations have to report factual events is a good thing. It does not prevent these media outlets from putting their biased opinion in subjects but at least makes them state facts. Braden Thier
ReplyDeleteThere is no doubt at all that mainstream media has a major effect on how the people view things. Through propaganda and other things like peoples phenomenal ability to warp the truth to make it more interesting or to make a better story. The reason its a big deal is because the news is a huge source for people to know whats going on in the world, without it people would be way less knowledgeable. If that knowledge the people get from news is warped or impure then whats the point in even having that knowledge? On how this biasness is connected to the 1st commandment is kind of a tricky matter. On on hand its good for the news station because the news gets to say what it wants but on the other hand its also bad for us because one can never really know whats going on if the facts are blurred with fiction or over exaggeration.

The news networks influence the consumers opinions and knowledge about issues they present. The first amendment states the freedom of press, which allows the news sources to say what they want to about topics. Therefore, the news sources present stories with their own opinions altering the facts. Many consumers use less than 3 news sources for their information. This leaves the consumers uninformed and particularly biased. The news also has the choice to not present issues which leaves the watchers ignorant of what else is happening in the world. --E
ReplyDeleteI think mainstream news sources influence our view of issues greatly. Because normally what the news says everyone believes something from it whether its true or not. Most of the time news casters stretch the truth making everyone believe something that's either not true or just full of lies. The first amendment gives everyone freedom of speech so the news exaggerates the truth by a lot. Some of these stories may be accurate but how can you tell if they're lying or not? You can't so the viewer needs to have there own opinions so they all don't believe what they see. -Haley Lindgren
ReplyDeleteMainstream news sources influence our views on current issues and on government opinions. They do this by stating their bias opinions, or the opinions that their network has paid them to have. Some news sources main point is not reporting the news, but influencing people to think the way they are. This relates to the first amendment because it states that everyone has the right to freedom of speech. They are allowed to say what they want from the constitution, but their news station does not always allow them to say their opinions if they don't stick with their political views. This way news doesn't have to be accurate. - Alexandra Bartmess
ReplyDeleteMainstream media corporations highly impact the way people view issues. Large news stations like CNN, ABC, and Fox often times only present one side of an argument. People base their opinions off these news reports because they do not think they are being lied to. Because of the first amendment and the freedom of speech, the corporations are not required to tell the whole truth. The news can be very biased and report an opinion or side. Because of their own ignorance, people do not question the media.
ReplyDeleteI feel like media really effects the way we view things because they only show use the thing they want use to see and not both sides. They can also manipulate the news to how they wanted it presented to us. Nobody really knows the whole story when this happens so they only believe one way. Garrett McNeil
