AHII

American History II students are discussing the various effects of the 9-11 attack.  Particularly, those effects regarding laws and government.

EXTRA CREDIT: From what you know about the Constitution, would you consider any of the effects unconstitutional and why would you believe this to be true?

  1. I think some of the effects could be unconstitutional. Some sections of the Patriot Act allow the government to do things that may be questionable to most. The government can now listen to phone calls, get access to emails that may be considered suspicious to them, place GPS devices on cars in your very driveway, etc. Another thing that has happened since the attack is the "arresting" of people who could be possibly terrorists. In one movie we watched, there were family members being taken because of their race and other factors. Why would you suddenly arrest someone who hasn't caused any problems or gone against the law? 2. Portions of the laws and policies that have gone into effect since 9-11 are unconstitutional from my stand point any way. The Patriot act for example contains many things that could be questionable when compared to the constitution, for example the harvesting of data from phone companies to see what people are saying to others out of the country. As well as filtering Emails and Text messages through a system that picks up on various words and or phrases to subject the conversations to closer review. These actions seem to violate the first amendment right to free speech. Rob McClure

  3. I think that many of the laws that were set in place as a result of 9/11 are unconstitutional. The Patriot Act allows the government to do just about whatever they want if they suspect someone could in any way be a terrorist or had anything to do with 9/11. I think that the government did a very good job at setting it up to to where they think they are following the constitution and just finding ways around it. I do not think that what they are doing is right. No one should be allowed to do some of the things that the government is doing such as making arrests and denying you of a lawyer and holding you for any amount of time with no contact to family. Before bills can be passed congress needs to read the proposed bill before voting, however in the case of the Patriot Act, not a single congress member read the act, it was written the night before and voted on the next morning. If people would have read it we may not be dealing with the unconstitutional acts that are taking place as a result of it.

  4. A lot of these new laws that came into effect from the Patriot Act being passed is very unconstitutional. Many innocent people were being taken from their families and homes just because they are the same race of the people who hijacked the planes. In some cases even after the people were cleared they were still kept in prisons in terrible conditions without any communication to their families. The Patriot Act should have never been voted on without allowing the congressmen to look it over and read the proposed bill. Our country was still in a panic from 9-11 and I believe the only reason it was voted for was so they didn't seem unpatriotic towards their country. Our government also used different types of torture on suspects such as water boarding. That kind of torture is a cruel and unusual punishment.

  5. I definitely feel that if there are any effects that may be unconstitutional, one would be the Patriot Act. This act allowed government officials to come into homes of people, unannounced, to search for anything "mysterious". The scary part about this is that a lot of the time, citizens don't even know that there area people coming into their home. The profiling process in the Patriot Act has also been very controversial. Countless people have been investigated because of the way they look, the religion they practiced, or where they are from. Many were wrongly charged guilty for planning an attack on the states and sent to ruthless prisons.

  6. Yes, i do believe that some if not all of the laws and regulations applied after 9-11 are unconstitutional, especially the Patriot Act, which i believe most agreed to it only to show that they weren't "patriotic" I goes directly against thing in the bill of rights.
