American History II students are currently studying the U.S. Constitution from Article I to all the amendments 1-27. They are also just completing Animal Farm by George Orwell.
EXTRA CREDIT: Discuss which of the five freedoms mentioned in the First Amendment is the most important and why. In addition, which of these five freedoms was the most important for the pigs in order to control the other animals of Orwell's farm?
In my opinion, freedom of speech is the most important. It gives Americans our right to speak out against the government, and state our opinions. I guess in animal farm it helped the animals fight back against the humans?... Something like that.
ReplyDeleteI think the the most important freedom mentioned was all animals are equal because it is saying that no matter what they are all the same. We see later in the book that the pigs don't really like this because they think of themselves better.

I would say the most important freedom mentioned in the first amendment is the freedom of speech. The whole rebellion started because of one idea that was shared with all of the others. Freedom of speech gave the pigs the ability to take control and let their opinions be heard. Without the freedom of speech they would have never been able to gain control and make a difference. Whether that be good or bad.

I would say that freedom of speech is pretty important. Without it, people wouldn't be able to share their opinions and ideas. Freedom to speak out can give people power to do things. This is why I believe it was the biggest factor for the pigs. They could speak and learn much faster than the rest and they took control.

I think that the most important right given to us in the First Amendment would be freedom of speech. The rebellion that the pigs started was only able to continue because they were able to speak out to one another. If we were not allowed freedom of speech we would not be able to make a difference with anything.

I feel that the most important freedom is the freedom to assemble. Freedom of speech is real great, but unless someone can find another person or two to hear their ideas, they're just gonna be running around in circles for awhile. The pigs were able to utilize this right by gathering together whether it was in town meetings or there smaller meetings where they learned to read and planned a their revolution.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the most important freedom in the first amendment is the freedom of religion. Religion is one of the most expressive and personal things people have. The American culture has become diverse because of this freedom and i think it’s so important that we aren’t suppressed into believing the same thing, or nothing. In America, there may be arguments over religion, but I’m glad we have the option to be passionate about something. Other nations, that don’t allow this freedom, are repressed and many of them are dictatorships. I think this is because you are allowed to believe in something higher than the government and bigger than the whole world. Other countries are afraid of the lack of control this gives them, so I’m proud that we are given this right.
ReplyDeleteIn the book Animal Farm, taking away the animals freedom of petition was most important in controlling them. The animals had no voice which allowed the pigs to put their own wants over the needs of the farm. Whenever an animal had doubts in the system or tried to speak out against it they were killed. This kept the animals from gathering together and fighting against the pigs or at least for better rights. That was the pigs key to success because with no one able to question their motives they could do whatever they wanted. Without this freedom the pigs had way to much control and it led to a dictatorship, that led the farm into ruins. The suppression of the freedom to petition was the most important freedom taken away because it gave the voice of the farm to the pigs alone.

I don't know which right I would choose as the most important. I think they have an equal importance.
ReplyDeleteFor example without the freedom to assemble and petition people wouldn't be able to come together but if there was no freedom of speech there would be no point in assembling because you couldn't be heard anyway.
In Animal Farm there was no freedom of speech at all. If the animals said one wrong thing basically they were killed because the pigs felt threatened. Because of this an overthrow of power was difficult because the pigs inflicted so much fear on the other animals.
