American History I

American History I students are discussing the causes of WWI and how these causes led to the outbreak of war.  In addition, we have recently completed a writing assignment on Theodore Roosevelt based upon his biography.

EXTRA CREDIT: 1.    Which of the four long term causes or policies that led to WWI were/are the most important and why?  Your answer is worth from 2-10 points.  So make it good.

                             2.    How would you characterize Teddy Roosevelt?  His personality, his views of the land, and his views of our country's role in the world?

  1. The four long term policies that lead to WW1 and pretty much any war before and after that are: Nationalism, Imperialism, maintaining balance of powers, and military growth. This is most important because not only is this the cause of World War 1, but it is the cause of most every war known on the planet Earth.

I would characterize Teddy Roosevelt as a man in love with nature, the west, and his family. He helped our country in more ways than just political, he helped shape our nation and left an impact on the people he met. He was constantly fighting for social reform and an avid outdoorsman/ conservationist. He fought for what he believed was right.

  2. 1. I think that the most important cause of WW1 was Militarism. Militarism caused distrust between countries. If you have a large army, countries may think you are planning to go to war with them or their allies. Militarism is the glorification of the military. It convinces others to run to join and that they are they first solution to make decisions. Deterrence is a major effect of militarism. Deterrence convinces others not to attack you.

    2. I would characterize Teddy Roosevelt as a down to Earth person who admires hard working Americans. Teddy Roosevelt enjoys the West because the way of life there. He admires how they work for a living and also their fashion. Teddy Roosevelt thought that the US should serve the world in some way. For example the Panama canal.

  3. 1. The one long term police that I believe was most important was militarism. I believe this was the most important cause if a country has strong militarism then they are going to be building up their military. This then makes all their neighboring countries get suspicious on why they are doing this so the build their armies and a domino effect happens.
    2. If I were to characterize Teddy Rosevelt I would describe him as a big kid. He loved hunting and the outdoor s he would throw dinner parties and he would not be put in charge of the money. His views of our country's role in the world was like a big brother in way because he stopped a war between Russia and japan and made trade easier by the panama canal.

  4. 1. I believe that a combination of Militarism and Nationalism made for the most important causes of World War 1. Militarism is the idea or belief that a country should have a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively and Nationalism is the strong belief that the interests of a nation are of great importance. With our nation having a strong military and great self interest, it probably appeared to other countries(such as Japan) as a target worth taking down because we were powerful in many aspects.
    2. I would characterize Teddy Roosevelt as being the walking definition of an American patriot and an all American man. He used the lands for hunting and enjoyed many other outdoor activities. He lived for his country and did whatever he could for the benefit of America. I would also call him a family man. He loved spending time with his family and the death of his son Quentin scarred him for the rest of his life.
