American History II students are currently studying the US Constitution and preparing for the citizenship test. Article I of the Constitution has been assigned to read and outline.
EXTRA CREDIT: Section 8 of Article I discusses the powers granted to Congress. Which of these powers do you think is the most important and why?
I think the most important power that is granted to Congress is the power to make laws and the power to collect and tax people. They could make some pretty horrendous laws and that is a lot of power to give a group of people. Luckily they have to go through the other house and the president. Also, they could really screw people over with taxes. Thats a lot of power, to decide on how much the people get taxed. Thats insane and super intimidating to all the common people, namely me. I have two jobs and don't want to have to spend my weekends working to pay taxes instead of working on weekends and after school to pay off my car.

I think that congress's power to declare war is important because it's one of the many things that keeps us from being a dictatorship.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important power congress has is maintaining the navy and the military. Without a strong navy and military the U.S. would be week.
ReplyDeleteI think congress has 2 important powers, coming up with laws and declaring war. Without laws the US would be a pretty crazy place to live and war can change a lot of things so being able to make it happen is a huge power for congress to have.
