Junior American History students have so far discussed Columbus and the slave trade.  This week we will be discussing the various events that led to the American Revolution.

Extra Credit: What have you learned from our class discussions so far concerning Columbus and the slave trade?

  1. I have learned that Columbus’s discovery of the americas was actually the Spaniards stealing land and people for his benefit to the point of mass suicide among the airawalks. The slave ships and the people who dealt in slaves were convincing themselves that the africans were animals that were just there for the taking and that they were doing the africans a favor by putting them into slavery. we also learn that the slaves were packed into the ship like sardines and weren’t very well kept. They were often used for the sailors sexual pleasures during the voyage.

  2. Well I think the big point at the beginning of this year was the point of view in which the history books were written. From the slave trade I learned about how terrible the conditions were for the blacks and how they were treated badly. I noticed that the history textbook seemed to kinda water down version of the blacks life. The slaves were kept at the bottom of the boat in coffin like boxes stacked up. there was no time for bathroom breaks and the smell from sweat and feces and many other factors was rancid. The women were used for the sexual pleasures of the ship crew and were stacked up in with the men as well. From the Columbus unit we talked about how Columbus did not really truly find America. The natives to the land were already there. Columbus was not a nice person to the Indians he used them because they were generous and unaware they were being cheated. - Cami 7th period

  3. I learned that Columbus is a jerk. He did not find the Americas he took them over. The natives showed him kindness and he killed them and enslaved them. The slave trade is really not much better. They would go out and catch blacks, put them on a boat, and bring them here. I did not know that the boat conditions were so bad. The thing that gets me is that they were just forced to live in there own filth.
