American History I

The Civil War involved more people than soldiers.  There were thousands of other citizens that also participated.


EXTRA CREDIT: Discuss the efforts of private citizens in the war effort for either side.

  1. The people on the north side stepped in to help their cause without any force making them to help, regardless of color. The south made their slaves fight or build stuff for the war.

  2. Women played a big role as private citizens that put forth imortant efforts in the Civil war. Women volunteered to do what the government would not or could not to. They served as a big aid during the civil war. They raised funds for the war and produced bandages and clothing for soldiers. Clara Barton, labored as a one person aid society throughout the war. At least 600 Union soldiers were women who passed as men until illness or death reaveled their disguise. THe civil war was the first war were women served as nurses.Along with women there were over 500,000 volunteers that served for the Union for three years in the War.
