American History I is now discussing our first administrations, including the problems that they faced, the exploration of the west, and the War of 1812.

EXTRA CREDIT:During the administration of George Washington, the U.S. managed to avert wars with Spain, France, and another conflict with England.  How did Washington manage to avoid these conflicts?

  1. Washington managed to avert wars with the french by trying to stay neutral with the countries. He did not want to have a war with any of them. Washington sent John Jay to solve the problem in London. John Jay managed to get the British to move back to the line boundary area that was established in 1783. the British also said that American ships could trade with the British ships in the west Indies. Thomas Pinckney got the Spanish to where they decided the the U.S. border would be at the 31st. parallel. Jay's and Pinckney's treaty are still in effect to day and the U.S. is and will maintain neutrality with the other counties.

  2. Washington's wise leadership was crucial. He organized a national government, developed policies for settlement of territories, previously held by Britain and Spain, stabilized the northwestern frontier and oversaw the admission of three new states: Vermont, Kentucky and Tennessee. Finally, in his Farewell Address, Washington warned the nation to "steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world." This advice influenced American attitudes toward the rest of the world for generations to come.
