American History II
American History II students have been studying the articles of the US Constitution. This week we have been reading and outlining Art. II & III.
EXTRA CREDIT: Discuss the idea of checks and balances and give a couple examples.
OR
Discuss the idea of judicial review and give an example.
Judicial review is when a higher powers act is reviewed and can be dismissed if it doesn't follow the constitution. An example of this would be the Maybury vs. Madison case where court decided a law congress made should not be passed because it was unconstitutional.
For the idea of checks and balances they created three branches of government. It was created so that no branch of government was more powerful than the others. The president can veto a law passed by Congress. Congress can over ride that veto if two-thirds of both houses votes so.
Checks and balances, Its a simple process really, there are three branches of government which is great because this means there is not ultimate power to one persons or party. Example- President can veto law if he isn't a fan of it and send it back to the congress be reevaluated and either it can be reevaluated or if both the houses gives it majority vote, two thirds vote, then the law will pas whether the president likes it or not. -Brandon Caswell
For checks and balances they created three branches of government. It was created so that no branch of government was more powerful than the others. It just keeps each other in line so nobody gets to greedy. Garrett McNeil
Checks and balances. Checks and balances were put in place to limit the amount of control each branch of government could have. The executive branch can approve or veto the legislative branch but the legislative can pass a vetoed bill with a 2/3 majority. The Supreme Court has the power to decide if a law is constitutional. Without checks and balances a branch of government could have more power than another branch. For example the president, as head to the military, can send troops but congress is the only branch that can declare war. Supreme Court can declare the presidential acts constitutional but the congress has the power of impeachment. e. Duram
