AHI students are now discussing the advantages of the North and the South in the Civil War, the role of women in the war, and the overall strategies of each side.
EXTRA CREDIT: What advantage did the North or disadvantage of the South was the main tipping point: the ultimate reason for winning or defeat?
I think that the main advantage of the North was that they had more people. The Civil War was a really bloody conflict for both sides, and in most of the battles, the North lost more people then the South. However, since the North had a larger population to draw from, they could keep replacing their soldiers more than the South. And then, once the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, the Union also added free slaves to their army. So I think eventually, the South just got out numbered. They couldn't replace their soldiers as well as the Union. This is probably one of the big reasons for their defeat.
ReplyDeleteIn the civil war, the North and South both had advantages and disadvantages. However, there was one ultimate reason for the Norths win, and the Souths defeat. The main reason was that the North had a very large population. It had way more people than the South, so they were able to replace the soldiers they lost in battle. Once the Emancipation Proclamation passed, the free slaves were able to fight for the Union army, and expand the population even more. The main reason for the Unions win in the Civil War, was that they had a very large population and they were able to out number the South.

A combination of the North's advantages and the South's disadvantages lead to the victory of the North. The North had a significantly larger army, which was a prominent reason for their victory. The South had such a high population of slaves, that when slaves were freed, many of them joined the Northern Army. If the Confederates wiped out their army, Lincoln would simply recruit a new army. They had so many people, that they eventually defeated the confederates.

The advantage for the north was that they had way more people. The norths population was bigger, they had replacemnets for solders in the war, unlike the south. And after the proclomation was passed, slaves were joining the northern army and eventually the south just got out numbered.
ReplyDeleteThe north had a large population, more than the south. The north also had a bigger army which helped them win. The south had a big population of slaves and when they were freed they joined the north. Stevi Johnson
ReplyDeleteThe South and the North both had their own disadvantages, and advantages in the war. The Union had overwhelming advantages though. They had a population of 22 million, along with most of the mineral deposits. A full 86% of the nations manufacturing plants were located in the North. The North also had 2.5 times the railroad mileage of the South. Almost every navy ship stayed with the North in the War. Anothe Huge advantage the North had was the great leader Abraham Lincoln. Whereas the South had better generals, and were fighting a defensive war, it wasnt a match for the amount of people the Union had to fight. So I believe that the huge amount of more people was a huge factor in the Union defeating the South. Another main tipping point was when Abe Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It brought renewed dedication and energy to the war effort forth the abolitionists. It also brought forth 200,000 freed slaves that fought with the Union. So in the end, I think victory was granted to the Union because of their overwhelming number of people in their army. The South were no match.
