The seniors discussed the historical background for US involvement in Vietnam beginning with the Vietnamese opposition of Chinese control, then French control followed by the Japanese and the French again. After WWII, the U.S. becomes actively involved in preventing Ho Chi Minh (the communist) from gaining control of his country in spite of US assurances that we would help Vietnam gain its independence for their help in rescuing downed American pilots in the war.
